The Cheltenham Festival is a free bet free for all

The Cheltenham Festival is a betting extravaganza, a free for all, that generates fortunes in betting turnover, and a huge slice of that comes from Ireland.

In fact, prior to introduction of the Euro in 2002, the Irish Punt/Pound exchange rate would swing by up to 5% every March as gambling mad Irish punters bought sterling en-route to Prestbury Park.

Betting exchanges and the abolition of betting shop betting taxes and the likes have changed the landscape somewhat and, relatively, what is gambled on-course now is probably considerably less than it once was.

But it’s the simplicity of betting online that has seen Cheltenham become a veritable betting bonanza. Conservative estimates say £400 million was gambled on Cheltenham Festival races in 2017.

And the good news… in 2016 the bookmaking industry is estimated to have lost £6 million during the four day Cheltenham Festival after nine favourites and one joint-favourite prevailed from the 28 races.

While that figure would also incorporate the cost of betting promotions such as ‘money-back if beaten a neck or less’, ‘faller insurance’, price boosts and additional each-way paying places it would not include the mind-blowing sums that would have been credited to customer’s betting accounts in Cheltenham free bets.

Free bets have become common in a marketplace where a potential customer’s business is aggressively fought over.  There is remarkable scope for credit/debit card holders to open up a raft of new betting accounts with the hundreds of online sportsbooks now residing in cyberspace.

Most, and most certainly all the household names – Ladbrokes, William Hill, Betfred, Coral, Paddy Power et-al – give first time depositing customers a free bet of some description as an incentive to bring their business to them.

This race to the top has no boundaries as some online bookmakers, particularly the fledgling ones, give away bigger and bigger Cheltenham free bet offers.  Ironically this form of marketing, while very effective in terms of new account opening, can also be a race to the bottom as shrewd Mr & Mrs Joe Public’s can manipulate all that has been thrown at them to ensure multiple account opening is a profitable exercise. Multiple free bets can be placed on just one race and with the field covered that means a guaranteed return.

Nevertheless online betting sites can’t afford not to offer a new customer free bet offers as they will exclude themselves from the race to attract the legitimate new customers which are out there to be caught and reeled-in.

And for those that are not trying to exploit the betting firms that are willing to give away something for the proverbial nothing… yet more free bets!

That’s right, the race for customer loyalty is almost as competitive as the race for new business so come Cheltenham Festival time expect to be bombarded with offers such as:  “Place a bet on any loser in the opening race (on all four days) of the Festival and have your stakes returned as a free bet!”.
